On December 22, "La Résolue", a French frigate, is hit by "Le Redoutable", another french ship.
Two days later, the commander of "La Résolue", Admiral Nielly sends his skiff to call for help.
Despite strong winds, the skiff, commanded by a young lieutenant from the island of Groix, approaches the shore safely. Shortly after landing, the crew is captured by pro-British Irish.

Richard White, the captain of the detachment, keeps gig in his family home, the Bantry House or Seafield, south of Bantry Bay, where it is preserved for over a century.
In 1944 it was offered at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.
